Preventing damp and mould in the winter months
As we head into winter, it’s not uncommon to see an increase of condensation in our homes, which can sometimes unfortunately lead to damp and mould.
We do not want any of our residents to experience mould or damp living conditions, especially as this could impact negatively on their health and well-being.
Our recently revised Damp and Mould Policy (2022) demonstrates EastendHomes’ commitment to provide homes and communal spaces that meet the Decent Homes Standard and are:
- well designed
- well maintained
- and ventilated and insulated to a high standard.
It also outlines EastendHomes’ responsibilities on how we will support residents if a damp or mould problem occurs.
If you are experiencing high levels of condensation, please know help is at hand. You can contact your housing office in person or by phone to report the issue. Our staff are fully trained to support you with this issue.
What happens next?
Our repairs or technical officer will then visit your home to get an understanding of how the problem has come about and to diagnose a solution.
There are also some simple tips to minimise condensation in your homes during the winter.
- Try to keep your home properly and evenly heated. A low background temperature of 15 degrees in all rooms is recommended
- Close internal doors when cooking or showering
- Keep the door closed and window open when drying clothes indoors
- Cover pans when cooking (this can also save you money on energy bills by using less heat to boil water)
- Use extractor fans provided
- Leave a gap between furniture and external walls
- Open bedroom windows for 5-10 minutes when you get up
