Fire Safety
Fire Safety — your role
- Keep fire doors closed – never wedge them open or remove door closers (they stop smoke and flames spreading).
- Test smoke alarms regularly – and report faults straight away.
- Keep escape routes clear – don’t block hallways or stairs and avoid storing items in communal areas or utility cupboards.
- Never tamper with emergency lighting or fire safety equipment – these systems save lives.
- Avoid storing hazardous items – such as flammable liquids, gas cylinders, or large amounts of cardboard and paper.
- Do not charge electric scooters, e-bikes, or mobility scooters in your property overnight – these can pose a serious fire risk.
- Do not store electric scooters, e-bikes, or mobility scooters in your property, please store on the balcony and remove all combustible items (See resident guide for combustible items)
- Charge devices safely – never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight.
- Know your building’s evacuation strategy (Stay Put or Evacuate) and follow instructions during an emergency.
These simple steps help prevent fires and make sure everyone can get out safely in an emergency.
Fire Safety in high-rise buildings
We take our responsibilities for managing fire safety at high-rise buildings very seriously, and will comply with the Building Safety Act 2022. This means that fire and building safety are managed with the support and involvement of all residents.
If you have any concerns or questions about how fire safety is managed at your high rise building , please contact us using our on-line contact form (below on this page), email firesafety@eastendhomes.net or by telephone. If work relating to fire and building safety is planned at any of our high-rise buildings, residents will be notified and given the opportunity to contribute to any decisions that need to be made.
Our Resident Engagement Strategy is available to download and read [pdf] 2MB.
You can access two key fire safety documents below:
Every year the communal spaces at our high-rise buildings are inspected to ensure that fire safety is being properly managed. The fire risk assessment for each of our high-rise buildings is available here: Fire Risk Assessments.
Evacuation Strategy
Most East End Homes buildings currently operate a “Stay Put Strategy”. If this isn't the case, we will communicate with you by letter explaining the following:
- The reason for the change of strategy for your building.
- What you should do in the event of a fire.
Housing Inspections
Housing Officers carry out regular inspections to make sure your home and communal areas remain safe and well-maintained. These checks help us identify issues early before they become serious and report them to the relevant team for prompt action.
Regular inspections help us find problems early and fix them quickly. They also support fire risk assessments and other safety checks, making sure your building stays safe and meets legal standards.
