Staying safe on Bonfire Night, Wednesday 5 November
The best and safest way to enjoy Bonfire Night is to attend a professionally organised public event.
But if you are using fireworks or sparklers, follow our top tips for keeping you, your loved ones and neighbours safe:
  • Don’t light fireworks on your balcony, communal green spaces or public parks.
  • Don’t throw or play with fireworks and supervise kids at all times.
  • Point them away from people and houses.
  • Only buy fireworks that have a CE mark from a licensed retailer.
  • Only adults should light or hold fireworks – keep everyone else well back, especially kids.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box until you’re ready to use them and follow the instructions.
  • Light fireworks one at a time at arm’s length and keep a safe distance.
  • Never go back to a lit firework, even if it hasn’t gone off.
  • Keep a water hose or fire extinguisher close at hand.
  • Keep pets indoors with the windows closed as fireworks can really frighten them.

  • Light sparklers one at a time and hold at arm's length.
  • Always wear gloves when holding or lighting sparklers
  • Never give sparklers to children under the age of five.
  • Carefully place sparklers in a bucket of water when they go out.

We hope your Bonfire Night goes with a bang in all the right ways!
