Board Members visit Island Gardens

On the 22 May, John Henderson organised an estate walkabout for EastendHomes Board members to see the work being undertaken on the Island Gardens estates and to talk to residents.

John noted that:

We met up with a number of volunteers from Barclays bank who were working in the communal gardens with EeH estate staff around Salford and Urmston House. Despite the drizzle the volunteers were working hard to repair and replant some of the areas after the winter. EastendHomes has good links to a number of corporate organisations thanks to the work of Paul Wilson who was also organising and working hard alongside the volunteers. Paul had also managed to secure a grant for the new plants.

Board members were keen to learn about the fire safety works that are due to start at Urmston and Salford as well as Farnworth and Castleton Houses later this year. There was also an opportunity to visit Galleon House where the fire safety works are now coming to an end with the scaffolding being struck and to talk to residents about their experiences, the positives and where improvements could be made. It was pleasing to note that the feedback on the contractor undertaking the fire safety work was positive from a customer care perspective.

Plans for the adjacent community centre at Galleon House were discussed before heading over to the Calders Wharf community centre and for a tour of this impressive facility by Lorraine Cavanagh OBE. Lorraine was keen to highlight the benefits to the local community generated by the partnership between EastendHomes and the Dockland Settlement Trust who manage the facility.

The walkabout ended with a visit to the local estate-based office situated in Manchester Road.
