Environmental Improvement Budget 2024/25

Eastend Homes has set aside an environmental improvement budget for each of our neighbourhoods. We are asking residents to see what environmental improvements they would like to see in their area.

To manage expectations and the level of work that can be done, we are sharing the total budget for all areas. The total environmental improvement budget is £100k which has been split proportionally based on the properties in each estate.

Table of Environmental Improvement Budget Breakdown

**This budget needs to be spent by 31st March 2025 and will not be carried over**

What can the budget be spent on?

This budget can only be spent on environmental improvements which benefit the wider community. These include improvements such as resurfacing of pathways, improving lighting, installing bike sheds, investment in greener spaces or play areas and so on.

If you're not sure whether your suggestion fits this category, share it with us as this can be something we look at when we collate the results.

What to be aware of when suggesting ideas

Depending on the idea’s put forward, more consideration will be given to environmental works that can be carried out on estates with communal lands belonging to Eastend Homes. This means several new development residents which are included in the apportionment figures may not directly benefit from the works as they may not be located near an estate. We understand this is not ideal, but we still want to hear from all residents as there may be scope for certain environmental improvements, even if the building you live in is not connected to an estate e.g. cycle sheds, improved lighting. We will look to review our process around the environmental improvement budget this year.

How to have your say on what the budget should be used for?

We want to collect ideas from residents and the easiest way for us to do this is by doing a quick survey.  If residents do not want to complete the online survey they can drop into our local office or call their housing officer to let them know what ideas, they wish to put forward.

The results will be collected, and we will be sharing your ideas with your local Estate Management Boards (made up of residents) to help us prioritise which works will be carried out.

Depending on how many ideas we get back, we may do a follow-on survey so residents understand the ideas which have been shortlisted and can then vote on the ones they want to see happen for their area.

What happens after you have chosen the works?

Once we have prioritised the list with the local Estate Management Boards, we will update our website to let residents know what works have been provisionally agreed. We will also try to communicate this to you by email or text message, that is as long as we have your email and mobile number on our system.

We will then start to collect quotes from contractors and instruct works.

What happens once the works have been done?

Once works are complete, we will update our website and share this in our resident newsletter that comes out every quarter.

We also hope that you see the changes as and when the works are done.

Important Note

Historically it was agreed that the £100k Environmental Improvement Budget (EIB) will be split between the areas that have an existing Estate Management Board (EMB). Currently as of now (1st January 2025) there are four areas with an EMB; Glamis, Island Gardens, Holland and Mile End. Having reflected on this historical decision we don’t believe this to be a fair distribution of the EIB budget as area’s without an EMB should still be entitled to a portion of the funding to also benefit from environmental improvements in their area.

Under the new consumer standards there is a need for us to be transparent, fair and reasonable. In order to be fair, we have made a decision to split the funding equally between the five areas. We understand the impact this will cause as some areas will now get less funding than what was originally set aside for them to spend. We also acknowledge that the timing to make this decision isn’t great but that being said, we have also made the decision that if there is any underspend by other areas for this budget, then the remaining budget can be distributed at the end of February to hopefully make up the original budget allocation that was agreed to the 4 EMB’s, see below.

Environmental Improvement Budget breakdown and difference.

As of now a large portion of the budget is still underspent hence our campaign to get the money spent by the end of March 2025. We believe this to be a reasonable compromise and hope that resident will understand the decision that has been made.
