Got a Business Idea? Go For It!

“Go For It”: High Street Enterprise is a free initiative funded by Tower Hamlets Council for Tower Hamlets residents, particularly women looking to develop their business idea.

Image of local entrepreneur Ruby Halim in Petticoat Lane market Ruby Halim has lived in Wheler House in Spitalfields for over ten years and is a busy mum to four children aged between 21 and 9 years old.

She regularly volunteers with the Food for Aldgate project and with the Oitij-Jo Collective, and contributes to her local community. Ruby is also an amazing cook.

Her ’yummy snacks’ as she modestly calls them, are loved by her friends, family and neighbours. So much so, they have inspired her to set up her own business to share her delicious savoury treats with the world. Thanks to “Go For It” that’s exactly what she is about to do.

The course is run by experienced hospitality professionals who will share their sector expertise and insight to help you make your enterprise dream a reality.

All start-ups will have the opportunity to test trade on local markets in Tower Hamlets. Local women have the opportunity to join other female market traders on Lady Lane Market in Petticoat Lane.

Our budding entrepreneur Ruby has always loved cooking. Starting at a young age by helping her Grandma prepare the family dinners, picking up lots of picking up lots of tips, secret spice mixes, and traditional recipes along the way. During lockdown she started an Instagram account to share her recipes and experience. Her advice to others learning is

Be patient with your cooking. Cooking is like art. If you give it time and practise your food will be amazing.

Her wisdom and recipes proved so popular it’s given Ruby the confidence to sign up to Go For It.

Ruby’s business idea is to sell homemade Shingara - a yummy Bengali Street Food snack with a wide variety of nutritious yet tasty fillings. Perfect to eat on the go. Her vision is simple to create “Home Made Food Presented with Love”.

All her meals are tried and tested by friends and family members. The dishes that make people smile the most will be the dishes that get served.

Excited about setting up on her own, Ruby has planned her time so she can make the course work around her family commitments, and will receive support from EastendHomes.

She has already met with Stephen Macintosh her coach at Go For It to organise her training and get completely clear on what is expected of her. Stephen said:

Through ‘Go For It’ we hope to be able to reach and support many of the talented people in Tower Hamlets bring dream projects to life and that this in turn helps communities and high streets to thrive.
