EastendHomes Press Statement – Holland Estate Consultation

EastendHomes are a local charitable association committed to providing new and improved homes for rent in Tower Hamlets.  Since 2005 we have invested over £125 million in improving our estates and we have built over 300 affordable new homes for local people.

EastendHomes is currently undertaking a feasibility study on our Holland Estate in Spitalfields which involves a possible redevelopment option.  This option could replace the existing 60 social housing flats with 125 new social homes.  The number of private flats on the estate, currently 82 would also substantially increase to help pay for the provision of more affordable homes.

EastendHomes appreciate that schemes of this nature often take many years to prepare and require broad support from all residents, as well as the Council.

The request to undertake the feasibility study came from the local Estate Board who are elected to represent residents on the estate.

Having undertaken a number of similar schemes elsewhere in Tower Hamlets EastendHomes were under no illusions as to the difficulties of carrying out this feasibility work.

The study is far from complete, but early initial ideas show that the potential for a significant increase in new affordable homes for local people.  Any scheme would ensure that existing tenants can stay in the area and can move back to the new homes, if that is their preference.  We also offer ways for leaseholders to swop their existing homes for new ones in the completed development.

EastendHomes believes that it is unfortunate that some people are saying a decision to demolish has already been taken.  This is completely untrue.  It is also disappointing that some individuals, not all of whom live on the estate, are intent on disrupting the consultation and have demanded that EastendHomes stop the consultation events planned for 7 and 11 April.

EastendHomes have so far resisted the calls to stop consulting local residents and the planned consultation event on 7 April 2015 went ahead.  Following the event however, and the distribution of material on social media sites EastendHomes has cancelled the next consultation due to be held on 11 April 2015.  We have a duty of care to our staff and we want to ensure that our residents and staff are able to meet and work free of intimidation.

EastendHomes is committed to full and constructive consultation with all our tenants and leaseholders and we are currently reviewing our approach to ensure that the views of all residents can be heard prior to any decisions being made about improvements and new homes on the estate.
