Two Residents Reach the Finals of the 2019 Housing Heroes Awards

2019 Housing Heroes Awards finalist EastendHomes is delighted to announce that two of our residents, Tom Madden and Tim Elliott, have reached the finals of the 2019 Housing Heroes Awards.

Both residents have been nominated for their outstanding contribution to their communities by EastendHomes and were shortlisted from hundreds of entries across the UK.

Tom Madden, aged 88, is a finalist in the Tenant Life Time Contribution Category having served his community on the Westferry Estate on the Isle of Dogs for over four decades.

Tom believes passionately about the right and power of social housing and ensuring people feel proud and happy of their home. He began his voluntary work by chairing his Tenants Residents Association. In the 1990s he was particularly focussed on addressing community cohesion issues during the political tensions on the Isle of Dogs.

This inspired him to successfully campaign for much needed funds for his estate and the Isle of Dogs. He then became an active and hugely respected Board member of locally focussed organisations including EastendHomes, always representing residents’ views and ideas.

Tim, who lives on the Holland estate in Spitalfields, is a finalist in the Tenant innovator of the year category thanks to his ideas to develop and project manage a new sustainable play area for the young people on his estate. Tim’s approach has ensured young people’s creative design ideas have created a completely unique space, from the bespoke play equipment to the design that mirrors the City skyline.  He has achieved this while using sustainable techniques throughout.  The new play area opens this summer.

John Henderson Managing Director of EastendHomes said:

“As a community led housing association we are so pleased to see Tim and Tom receive this recognition. They are hugely respected by their neighbours and us all at EastendHomes for their energy and commitment to improving their neighbourhoods and involving people in the process. We wish them loads of luck at the forthcoming award ceremony. In our minds they are already winners.”

Winners will be announced at the award finals is on the 24 June 2019.
